Re-igniting the Campaign

NoMoreRates has been relatively quiet for the last year or so except for my occasional interviews with the media.  This period has largely been consumed by the changes to Auckland local government – and the most recent news from there is raising ratepayers’ fears of significant rates rise to come, and council expenditure soaring through the roof.

Other councils around the country are now revealing similar trends – especially Dunedin where rates could be raised by almost 12%

Despite a Royal Commission and the Independent Rates Inquiry our ultimate aim of a new system for local government funding has stalled again and we must renew our battle for a fair system of local taxation to pay for local services.

I invite you all to join this campaign by signing up to NoMoreRates so that we can face the Government and our councils with a nationwide army of people who have had enough of this iniquitous rating system.

We need your news and views so that we can build up a nationwide picture of the problems and possible solutions to this vexatious rating system.

TWO Objectives

  • To replace the present system of council rates with a new, fairer system, which reflects both services provided and the ‘ability to pay’ of various sectors in the community.
  • To develop a system of restraining council expenditure to levels which the community approves of, and which the community believes it can afford.
