More evidence that there are problems with property rates all over the world.Council faces court threat for rate increases
April 24th 2007

The Umgeni Municipality could find itself in a Constitutional Court challenge over its recent decision to increase rates, in some cases by more than 500 percent.
Robin Barnsley, President of the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union (Kwanalu), said on Monday that Kwanalu had briefed counsel to express an opinion on the merits of launching a constitutional court challenge to the rates levied in eight KZN municipalities that were applying the new Property Rates Act, due to be implemented from July 1.
There were problems relating to this in each area, including the lack of consultation, procedures followed, problems with property valuations and "excessive rate randages" adopted by the municipalities.
One of my properties in the area has seen a rates hike of 500 percent. This is absolutely ludicrous and cannot be justified.
"We don't pay bills with percentages, but with rands and cents."
"Section 229 of the constitution empowers municipalities to rate properties, but not to the extent that it becomes prejudicial to the health of the local and national economy." Media Archive
